For a normal person, a tire may look quite basic for u i.e. a black, round entity with the help of which our vehicle moves on the road. But there are amazing, surprising facts about the tire. Keep reading till the end to know more...

1. The original color of the car tire is white.

The natural color of rubber is white, therefore tires if left in their natural state would be white. The black color originally came as a byproduct of adding carbon to strengthen the tire. Black has remained constant for aesthetic reasons like being able to withstand dirt and the color complementing any color car.

2. Tyres can be recycled into a variety of products/materials.

Tires are currently recycled into more than 110 products.  Common uses for recycled tires around the world are roading, artificial turf, and playground mats. 

3. The name " tire".

The word tire or tire originated from 'attire' as the product was seen as clothing for the wheel

4. The world's biggest production tire weighs over 5.5 tonnes and is over 4.2 meters tall

Titan Tyre created these monster tire and wheel assemblies. The tires were first shipped to Canada’s oil sands for use in mining applications. They now are being used all over the world for machinery at large mining operations.

5. Tyres have the date they were produced on the sidewall - it's called a dot code

Pictured here the dot code is a four-digit number with the first two indicating the week in the year they were produced and the last two specifying the year. These are important to note, especially when purchasing or using second-hand tires.

6. Run-flat tires have the ability to work for a limited time even with no air.

Sidewalls of tire give them the capability of traveling without any air in the tire. This eliminates the need for an emergency roadside repair.

7. Over 6.8 million tires are produced every day

This is expected to grow to over 8.2 million per day by 2019. The largest tire producing nation is China followed by the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany.

8.  According to many people, valve caps are used so that air doesn't get less but actually, Valve caps do not prevent the tire from losing air but are present to keep dust, water, and mud from entering the valve and cause air loss.

9. There is a myth that: During summer times, the air in the tire expands due to high temperatures and thus the tire pressure should be reduced by a few PSI. But the fact is, The tire heats up when PSI is reduced which causes the tire wall to flex or bend. We advise you to maintain the company-recommended PSI even during the summer months.

10.  There is a myth that Slick tires or racing tires make your car/bike go faster. But the fact is, This is only true to an extent because slick tires provide better grip and handling only in dry conditions because of a larger contact patch with the road surface. That is why one sees Formula 1 and MotoGP machines making use of tires with no tread pattern. However, it is extremely unsafe to install such tires on road-going vehicles as the car/bike will lose traction very easily on a wet surface.
